The Palladio Method

After the 'End of History' it may surprise that a conference intends to discuss a distant master builder from the 16th century. After all, the present is confronting us with sufficient unresolved questions. Yet it is precisely because we live in a world dominated by man-made development that we cannot avoid looking at the history of those places which we design and in which we live. The historical layers of buildings and their remnants in the urban landscape tell of the needs and ideologies of different times. Decisions of the past accumulate in the present - the interdependencies of cultural, political and economic requirements still apparent. The past achievements in architecture and urban planning determine future action.

In this sense, looking at the past should serve to reflect on the present. Looking at Palladio's method serves to gain a critical distance from the day to day. The point is not to follow Palladio's legacy in neo-classical imitations to the present day. Instead, the example of Palladio should inspire us to reflect from a conceptual perspective on the making of architecture, the possibilities of construction and the experience of architecture. Strengths and weaknesses should be discussed and ideally, this may lead to new ways of thinking in contemporary architectural design and building.

The approach to Palladio is multifaceted. The lectures reflect on the breadth of the discipline: design, construction, history of art and architecture, historical building fabric and architectural and urban theory. Important questions will be addressed in the past and in the present: questions of design and construction, the appearance and spatial configuration of architecture, its meaning and imagery as well as its political and cultural significance.
