The role of layperson resuscitation is becoming increasingly significant worldwide. To strengthen the chain of survival, it is imperative to commence training in 'life-saving measures' within schools. In 2014, the Conference of Ministers of Education decided to incorporate resuscitation into the curriculum.
The aim of this study was to investigate the significance attributed by students, teachers, and individuals from the general population to the topic of 'life-saving measures' and to assess the extent to which this topic is currently implemented in schools or could be feasibly implemented.
To achieve this, students (N = 315), teachers from Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein (N = 45), and individuals from the general population with both medical and non-medical backgrounds (N = 125) were surveyed. All participants attributed high relevance (Md = 3.8–4.7; 5-point Likert scale: 1–5) to the topic of 'life-saving measures' for schooling. The attribution of significance by students was independent of gender and/or grade level (5–8 and 9–12).
Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended to introduce 'life-saving measures' from grade 5 onwards, with a minimum of four hours of instruction per year. Moreover, it is suggested to provide appropriate training to teachers in school and to equip them with suitable teaching materials. Developing school-appropriate concepts is essential to enhance the competence of students in performing life-saving measures correctly.
